How we spot a good indie game before downloading

September 18, 2026 · Markus Jensen

We download a lot of junk so you don't have to, but over time you learn the tells. A good indie game usually shows its personality right in the screenshots. If every image looks like a generic template, it probably plays like one.

Read the update history. A developer who patches regularly and writes honest notes is someone who cares. Dead release pages are a bad sign, even for a game that looked fun.

Check how the game asks for your attention. Does the store page lead with gameplay or with vague promises? The best small studios are proud of the actual thing they made and show it off plainly.

Finally, trust communities over charts. Small forums and comment threads surface strange, specific recommendations that algorithms never will. Half the games we cover came from someone saying 'you have to try this weird thing.'
