Five pocket RPGs that respect your thumbs
Mobile RPGs have a reputation problem. Too many are just menus with a story bolted on. But a handful of smaller studios are building real role-playing experiences that fit a touchscreen instead of fighting it.
The trick is UI. A good pocket RPG uses big, tappable targets and keeps the important numbers visible without a magnifying glass. Ember Covenant does this well, with a grid combat system that's readable at a glance.
Pacing matters too. The best ones let you play in bursts. A fight here, a dialogue scene there, then put the phone away. Nothing worse than an RPG that punishes you for not sitting down for an hour.
If you're new to the genre on mobile, start with something story-driven rather than loot-driven. Loot grinds burn out fast. A good story pulls you through the slow parts and leaves you actually remembering the game.
